As the Gamecocks move into game 5 of the season (3rd conference matchup), one question looms around the dedicated Gamecock fans, will head coach Shane Beamer be fired? For some it’s a question of not if, but when. While others are claiming “this is our team historically” or looking to give Beamer more time. Let’s dive into all the details around Beamer’s potential firing and his career with South Carolina.

Shane Beamer’s career and record

Shane Beamer took the reins after former head coach Will Muschamp was let go during the 2020 season. Before getting his first head coaching opportunity at South Carolina, Beamer’s coaching resume included several positions (DB/RB coach, recruiting coordinator, defensive positions coach, special teams coach, and several other positions coach/coordinator) at a wide variety of schools such as Georgia, Virginia Tech (his Alma mater), South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, and Oklahoma.

Since becoming head coach, Beamer’s record has been 35-32 (.522) overall and 16-26 (.381) SEC along with a 1-2 bowl record. That record includes the historical 9-4 season in 2024 where Beamer led the Gamecocks to more victories through his first four seasons than any other coach in South Carolina history. I think I speak for all fans when I say we were all on top of the world at the conclusion of the 2024 regular season. When the 2025 season rolled around and we all went into the season with high hopes, we were shortly robbed of that feeling when the Gamecocks went 4-8 and have so far followed that up with a 2-2 season this year. Not to mention through the last 16 games being 6-10 and 1-9 in SEC games since the start of the 2025 season, plus the 7 straight SEC losses. At the conclusion of the 2025 season, Beamer made several comments that this seasons team would be far better than the previous season and even hinted at potentially being a playoff contender. The problem most Gamecock fans are facing with Beamer is the regression of the team since his start, whereas in most coaches careers it’s quite the opposite.

What would firing Beamer look like?

When the discussion of firing Beamer comes up, the biggest concern is his buyout if the University were to fire him. In 2025, after the 9-4 season, Beamer was given a raise along with a contract extension until 2030. This included a salary of $8.15 million with a $100,000 raise each year up until 2030. As of right now, if Beamer were to be fired midseason, his university-initiated buyout would be 65% of the remainder of his contract, which comes out to be $27.9 million. If the university elects to wait until after the season (December 1st being the earliest date) the buyout drops down to $22.55 million. That would give the university around $5 million in savings if they were to stick it out until after the season is over.

There’s two sides to the token when it comes to firing Beamer if it were to take place. Firing him now or at any point before the end of the season would give an interim coach the opportunity to turn the season around but that comes at the cost of about $5 million. If they were to wait, the university would save $5 million but have no “trial run” with a coach before hiring them full time if they choose someone within the team already. Majority of fans are under the impression that OC Kendal Briles would take over that position if an interim coach were needed. That would also give the university an opportunity to assess his coaching ability before making a full time hire, most likely in January.

Beamer’s case to plead

Shane Beamer hasn’t been all bad in terms of numbers at South Carolina. He’s had several historical moments during his head coaching tenure at South Carolina. Beamer’s 35-32 record actually ranks 4th in coaching records behind former South Carolina coaches, Steve Spurrier, Joe Morrison, and Jim Carlen. Through his first 5 seasons, he’s actually pretty comparable to South Carolina’s winningest coach, Steve Spurrier. Beamer’s record is 33-30 (.524) in comparison to Spurriers 35-28 (.556) record in his first 5 seasons. Spurrier eventually separated himself with 3 straight 11-2 seasons which made him the winningest coach the Gamecocks have had. Beamer has also been unusually successful with ranked wins particularly against top 10 opponents. Beamer has went 3-4 against top 10 opponents compared to other coaches records such as Spurrier (2-9), Holtz (1-9), Carlen (0-3), Muschamp (1-11), and Scott (0-9). Overall he’s racked up seven ranked wins and three top 10 wins in his 5 years at South Carolina.

Beamer also has excelled at recruiting during his head coaching career at South Carolina. Before taking the head coaching position he worked as a recruiting coordinator for South Carolina and Mississippi State so he brings experience in that aspect. With the exception of 2022 (#27), South Carolina has ranked top 20 when it comes to recruiting talent including this year being #15 in the country. Beamer also brought in a lot of instate talent beating out nearby competitors, Clemson and Georgia, who have historically gotten players over South Carolina.

What’s next if Beamer’s gone?

Several coaches have been trending as potential coaches for South Carolina if the university were to let Beamer go. The most likely scenario is that Kendal Briles will step up as interim if a mid season firing were to take place. If a post season firing were to happen, some potential names that have come up include: Buster Faulkner (Florida OC), Lance Taylor (Western Michigan HC), Chris Hampton (Oregon DC), Jake Dickert (Wake Forest HC), and Jimbo Fisher (former ACC/SEC head coach). These are all speculative candidates and contact has not been made with them.

Unfortunately when coaches are fired, there tends to be a “rebuilding” period while the new coach settles in and gets the program back on its feet. This could potentially mean a season or two of less than ideal records for the team and prolonged suffering for the fans. If Beamer were to be fired mid season, there’s hope that the “rebuilding” can be fast tracked by the interim and the ball can get rolling on becoming a playoff worthy team. Also important to note Beamer’s recruiting ability and reputation that could potentially mean not locking down those recruits if he were to be let go.

Is Beamer really the problem?

There’s no doubt that this team isn’t playing to its full potential but is Beamer to blame? This seasons team has loads of talent across all phases but there seems to be a disconnect somewhere. Defense has trouble covering the opponent in passing and can’t seem to stop a run game and the offensive line has drastically improved since last season but now QB LaNorris Sellers has been plagued with under/overthrown balls, inaccurate throws, terrible reads, and throwing to receivers in tight coverage when other receivers are wide open. The red zone has also been troubling for the Gamecocks with majority of their early drives in both the Mississippi State and Alabama games ending with either no points or settling for a field goal. Personally, I can’t say whether the coaches aren’t coaching or the players aren’t playing to their full potential but clearly a frustrating disconnect somewhere within this team.

Can Beamer save himself from the sword?

At this point in the season, South Carolina sits 2-2 and 0-2 against SEC opponents. Beyond that South Carolina is 1-9 against SEC opponents since the beginning of 2025. Is there anything that Shane Beamer can do at this point to not be at risk of being let go? A win against Kentucky or Florida will only put a bandaid on the bullet hole of the past two seasons. If Beamer wants to save his job, this team needs to win every game the rest of the season with the exception of Georgia and possibly Florida based on the rest of their season. If South Carolina can have an 8-10 win season, maybe the 2 losses can be marked off as a rough start and Beamer can redeem himself. Possible? Yes. Probable? Not with the way the season has went so far.
